Employment Status

You may fall into an employment category that is not entitled to redundancy pay. For example, if you signed a form of self-employed contract you will not be entitled to redundancy pay. Generally speaking, if you received a payslip and your employer deducted PAYE from your pay, then you are probably an employee. If your employer did not do this, you are probably not a full employee and you may find it difficult to claim from the Redundancy Payments Service (RPS). Other categories of worker who cannot claim redundancy pay include merchant seamen, share fishermen, former registered dock workers, crown servants like members of the armed forces or police, apprentices who are not employees when their training ends, or domestic servants who are members of the employer's immediate family.
